Our Services

Becoming a Member

We are based at the Wheatbridge Medical Centre in Chesterfield and serve the five districts of North Derbyshire (Bolsover – Chesterfield – N E Derbyshire – Derbyshire Dales (north) and High Peak.

We hold Advice Sessions at various venues and Home Visits can be requested for those people who are unable to attend our Resource Centre or Advice Sessions -

The main aim of the organisation is to provide free information and to demonstrate equipment to hearing impaired people whose lives can be improved so that they can feel included and be more involved in society.

Deaf and Hearing Support compliments the services provided by the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Audiology Dept and Derbyshire County Council Adult Social Care Services.

Appointments in the Resource Centre last approximately 45 minutes – Service users are able to try out equipment to help them hear the television more clearly, hold a conversation on the telephone with family and friends and they can also look at other equipment to help them to feel involved and included:

Information is available on all aspects of deafness and hearing conditions eg Tinnitus, Menieres, Usher syndrome and also on other support centres in the area.

Advice sessions are held at the following Venues on a monthly basis.

Talks

Deaf Awareness talks can be requested - We can travel to all parts of North Derbyshire and tell groups about our experiences of deafness and demonstrate equipment to encourage greater awareness of the support that is available for Deaf / Hearing impaired people.

Speech to Text Service

We can provide Speech to Text Services to ensure your event is accessible to Deaf and Hearing-Impaired People who need to read what is being said. An operator will type what is being said and it will be shown on a projector screen or on a computer monitor placed infront of the person who is reading it.

This service can be provided for people who are unable to hear at meetings / conferences and require the spoken word to be typed up and displayed on a screen.

For further details on charges please contact us.

Providing Deaf Awareness Training and Speech to Text Services enables more deaf people to attend accessible events in their community, or at work and allows them to feel included and to be involved in decision making.

North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Derbyshire County Council provide the core funding for the organisation to cover the day to day running costs and the additional revenue we raise from the above services helps us to cover the costs of providing these extra services in North Derbyshire.

Volunteers

We pride ourselves on our excellent team of volunteers.

Recruiting new volunteers is an important role of our organisation. All volunteers go through an enhanced CRB check and each new volunteer attends a vigorous training programme to ensure they are fully aware of the products and services that are available to assist with hearing everyday sounds.

The volunteer team have a professional outlook and have a friendly approach. The team consists of a mix of hearing aid users and hearing people who work very well individually and as a team.

We value the time our volunteers give to Deaf and Hearing Support as they are an integral part of our organisation.

Volunteers gain experience of working with members of the public and increasing their own confidence and ability to deal with the various tasks they undertake. Volunteers find the work very rewarding and gain a great deal of satisfaction. "Bringing a smile makes it so worthwhile" "I enjoy meeting people and helping them to make a choice".

Volunteers live in all areas of North Derbyshire. We operate a flexible timetable to suit the volunteer’s individual availability whether they give a couple of hours a week or a couple of hours a month.

Volunteer team meetings are held on a regular basis and any expenses incurred are reimbursed by Deaf and Hearing Support i.e. travelling to the Resource Centre, home visits etc.

Volunteers choose which tasks they wish to carry out such as Resource Centre appointments, Home visits, Advice Sessions, Collections, Fundraising and assisting in the office.
